A contemporary pathway for Dispensing Opticianry in Aotearoa New Zealand
Dispensing Opticianry is a profession with a strong technical foundation, and that foundation remains at the heart of the new AAOO programme.
Today’s Dispensing Optician works with sophisticated lens designs, complex prescriptions, digital measurement systems, advanced ophthalmic technologies and increasingly individualised optical solutions.
Contemporary practice therefore requires more than learning procedures alone. It requires an understanding of the optics, physiology and interactions that underpin successful ophthalmic dispensing, together with the professional judgement required to apply that knowledge in practice. Please note that this course and qualification recognition is pending ODOB approval.
A clear pathway into the profession
The programme is being developed as a flexible progression through ophthalmic optics and dispensing, allowing candidates to build their knowledge in stages and, subject to the relevant approval processes, progress from foundational study through to Diploma-level education.
Foundation Learning
Build core knowledge in ophthalmic optics, lenses, frames, measurements, fitting and practical dispensing.
Certificate IV in Ophthalmic Optics and Dispensing
The Certificate IV stage is designed to provide a defined intermediate point within the programme, allowing candidates to consolidate their knowledge and practical dispensing skills before deciding whether to progress further.
Diploma in Opticianry
Candidates wishing to continue would progress into Diploma-level study, developing advanced knowledge, professional reasoning and the competencies required for contemporary practice as a Dispensing Optician.
Qualification titles and programme structure are subject to the relevant New Zealand approval and accreditation processes.
